All the City & Guilds qualifications are listed on the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF)
What is the purpose of the NQF?
The NQF is a means for transforming education and training in South Africa. It has been designed to
- Combine education and training into a single framework, and bring together separate education and training systems into a single, national system.
- Make it easier for learners to enter the education and training system and to move and progress within it.
- Improve the quality of education and training in South Africa.
- Open up learning and work opportunities for those who were treated unfairly in the past because of their race or gender.
- Enable learners to develop to their full potential and thereby support the social and economic development of the country as a whole.

City & Guilds at Prue Leith Chefs Academy
The Academy offers the following qualifications alongside the 18 month Diploma in Food and Wine. (Compulsory for all students):
Food Preparation and Culinary Arts (7065)
- 003 Food Preparation and Cooking Principles 1
- 004 Food Preparation and Cooking Practice 1
- 016 Food Preparation and Cooking (Culinary Arts) Principles 2
- 017 Food Preparation and Cooking (Culinary Arts) Practice 2
Diploma in Patisserie (7065)
- Patisserie Principles
- Patisserie Practice
The students are registered with City & Guilds in their 1st Semester. Once the student is registered, Prue Leith invoices the account holder for examination fees. The certificate examination is written at the end of 1st Commis semester and both Diplomas are written at the end of 2nd Commis Semester. The examinations occur at the same time as the Prue Leith examinations unless City & Guilds rosters otherwise. City & Guilds Pass Requirements are as follows;
- 75 - 84% = Pass
- 85 - 94% = Merit
- 95 - 100% = Distinction
Units 004,017 and 019 are all practical assessment which the Academy performs throughout the student’s attendance at the Academy. The Academy will provide evidence to City & Guilds towards the end of the course of each and every student’s competency, which is assessed in the training kitchen, main kitchen and through the Portfolio of Evidence that the student must complete on practical release. It is possible that the Academy will deem a student as not competent.
Your City & Guilds number is forever, you can take examinations again at any other approved centre anywhere in the world.
Certificates of unit credits will be identified by a blue ribbon. Learners who are successful in all components will be identified by a red ribbon. On graduation the students will be handed their City & Guilds Certificates.
Examination Fees
- The fees are set by City & Guilds.
- Prue Leith Chefs Academy does not charge to assess students for City & Guilds
- (All costs valid until August 2009 and are VAT exclusive)

Roles of Responsibility
It is the learner's responsibility to:
- Have the assessment booklet at the Academy every day.
- Ensure that the assessment booklet is completed.
- Write your City & Guilds examinations
It is the Centre's (Academy) responsibility to:
- Ensure that the learners have been registered with City&Guilds.
- Store assessment booklets for one year on completion.
- Ensure that examinations are sent to City&Guilds, Johannesburg
