Student loans are available from most banks provided the student and his/her guarantor comply with the bank's requirements. The loans are advanced at the commencement of the course, and are subject to differing rates of interest. Loans are typically required to be redeemed in full over a period of three to four years after the student graduates.
The conditions attaching to the loan include, but are not limited to the following:
- The student must be in possession of a matriculation certificate or equivalent.
- The application must be supported by a guarantor or surety, generally a parent, who must meet the bank's requirements regarding income and assets.
- The interest rates on the loan fluctuate according to the prime rate of interest.
- Interest must be serviced during the period of the loan.
