Prue Leith’s Fabulous Foodie Finds – July 2011
DOP San Marzano peeled tomatoes stocked by Super Sconto<

With our Italian adventures from last semester and some more to come this semester we are keeping our eye out for quality Italian ingredients. It was the DOP (Denominazione d’origine protetta) tinned tomatoes from the Sarnese Necerino area in Campagna that had us writing ode’s to tomatoes last semester! – It all of a sudden made sense why tomatoes are classified as a fruit. Tinned as they may be, these tomatoes are beautifully ripe and sweet. They need very little help to make a good dish.
Foxenburg (Cheese, organic olive oil and oyster mushrooms)
Wellington, Western Cape, (021) 873 5617 www.foxenburg.co.za, info@foxenburg.co.za
The visit to Marianne and Jan Hemmes’ farm was a definite highlight of the recent Prue Leith Food and Wine Tour. Not only do they produce award winning 100% goat’s milk cheeses but also a certified organic olive oil that is simply sublime! Jan also took students through the production process of oyster mushrooms that was quite an eye opener. The passion and dedication that goes into Foxenburg produce was however the talking point as we left (and the yoghurt that everyone thought should be served as dessert rather than breakfast!). Three cheers to quality small suppliers!
Perfect Partners
In our recent culinary travels of the Western Cape we have eaten, drank, enjoyed, tasted, learned, appreciated and returned inspired. We had several food and beverage pairings and the once that we scribbled down for future reference included:

- Highland Park Single Malt Whiskey with Smoked Salmon
- Laphroaig Single Malt Whiskey with Gorgonzola
- KWV 10 Year Old Vintage Brandy with Belgian Hazelnut Praline & Union’s craft beers with Prego rolls
- Fairview’s Spice Route Chakalaka with chevin rolled in chakalaka spice blend (more than just the names match!)
