Prue Leith’s Fabulous Foodie Finds

Pastelaria Princesa Confectionary and Coffee Shop:

146 Queen Street, South Kensington, 011 675 9978 – Chefs Debby and Maria discovered this delectable little shop when on Culinary Travels with the 2nd Commis class last year.  We have fallen in love with them mainly for their superb pasteis de nata  – undoubtedly some of the best in the city. They also produce a variety of other traditional Portuguese pastries and lovely bread, but it is those delectable custard tarts that we return for (even pastry chefs sometimes buy in!)

Petit Cochon:

Cnr Rivonia Road and 1st Avenue Morningside; – Fabulous French charcuterie has finally arrived in Jo’burg. The French trio Christophe, Gerald and Stephane has been treating the city to their stunning rillettes, terrines, pâtés and delicious Toulouse sausage at markets during the past year but they are setting up shop.  You can also order through their website. Few things in life can provide more pleasure than these artisan spreads on crusty bread!

Wong Fong Chinese Super Market:

Clubview Corner, Lyttelton Rd Centurion, 012 755 8580 – What a relief that we no longer have to travel to the end of the world  for exotic Asian ingredients. This well stocked retailer in Chinese, Japanese and Thai ingredients is literally a few blocks from the Academy and they stock a remarkable selection of ingredients. From fresh bok choi , daikon and mung bean sprouts to frozen dim sum (for those buying in ) and a great selection of rice, noodles, soy sauces and oriental spices. The neighbourhood desperately needed this exotic touch!
