Prue Leith team to take on the C&G challenge
Prue Leith Chefs Academy is very proud to announce that 2nd Commis Imke Meintjies and Andrew Nicolson were selected as one of four teams to take part in the final round of the City & Guilds Student Skills Challenge.
Their entry that secured them a place in the final was a creative South African menu that included a Cape curried snoek starter, Impala wrapped in caul for main course and a compilation dessert plate of “Free State sweets”. (Also see this month’s featured recipe by Duard van Dyk and Elbeth van Wyk who also entered.)
Chef Ryan Shell, hot kitchen sous chef, has been the driving force in getting the 2nd commis class into competition spirit with regular Skills Challenges that we hosted last year. With stunning Silikomart prizes sponsored by Cofab every month students really showed their competitive edge: Neil Nell to everyone’s surprise walked away with the Christmas prize when he won the knife skills challenge despite his bandaged hands – the unfortunate result of a motorbike accident! (Other competition winners included Luandrie Barnard – Chocolate Challenge and Wernike Bezuidenhout – Knife skills Challenge).
Andrew and Imke will compete at the Hostex show at the Sandton Convention Centre from 13 to 16 March in a three day competition focussing on basic skills. We wish them all the best and the entire Academy will be there on the final day to support them!
