SANBS Blood Drive at Prue Leith

Prue Leith’s SRC undertook a social initiative to hold a SANBS blood drive at the Academy as of July semester 2010.

The SANBS is Section 21 Company and relies totally on donations of blood to fulfill their mission to save lives.

Prue Leith’s SRC voted this as a great opportunity for their fellow students to become more socially aware and contribute to saving lives.

With great pride we can say it was a wonderful success with the SANBS very willing to return in 56 days for another vampire session!

‘Suitable donor candidates must be able to tolerate the rapid withdrawal of 450-500 ml of blood, and the longer-term reduction in haemoglobin levels. They should be over 50 kg in weight, have a haemoglobin level of 11 g/dl (Hct of 0.33) or more, and be between the age of 16 and 70.’ www.sanbs.org.za

Unfortunately a few of our students who have rather blocked ears did not listen to the sound advice of the nursing sisters and had a few untimely sleeps during class afterwards!  Otherwise it was an event many students are looking forward to the repeat of, due to holidays in Malaria areas many were unable to donate.

We look forward to SANBS’ return towards the end of September 2010!
