With summer fast approaching, this is the absolute best way to enjoy coffee! Start with a stronger than usual brew, you won’t regret it. 


500ml strong black coffee
80ml castor sugar
80ml liquor of your choice 



  • Dissolve the sugar in the hot coffee and allow to cool, before you add the liquor.
  • Pour the mixture into a flat freezable container and place in the freezer. 
  • After about an hour if ice crystals have started forming, stir the mixture with a fork.
  • Return to the freezer and freeze again for about 30 minutes before stirring the ice again.
  • Repeat the process until larger lumps of ice have formed. (Granita has a course ice texture, it should not be smooth as sorbet.)
  • Spoon into elegant glasses to serve as a palate cleanser, of if you serve this as dessert, top with a dollop of mascarpone cream.
