Basic Baking Courses

Beginning with Basic Baking Courses

When one of your children is required to take baked goodies to school for an event or fête, do you rush off to your closest bakery, food store, or home industry outlet to buy a tray of cupcakes? Do you repeat this process to acquire teatime treats when it’s your birthday and your work colleagues are expecting cake with their coffee, in accordance with office tradition?

If you’re one of many who would reply in the affirmative, you’ve probably made up your mind that baking is beyond your capabilities, feeling that you’re forever doomed to support one or another baking business for all your cakes, gateaux, tarts, scones, pies, desserts, and quiches. Fortunately for those who would classify themselves as being challenged by baking, this is a skill that can be taught and learned, quite quickly too, by enrolling for one or more of Prue Leith Chefs Academy’s Baking courses.

The Very Beginning: A Very Good Place to Start

The lyrics from one of the songs featured in production, Sound of Music, states: “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start!”. In baking terms, this could quite easily refer to Prue’s basic courses, the very best place to start – baking – at the basic beginners or novices level. At Prue Leith Chefs Academy, our initial basic baking course is presented in a morning session from 09:00 to 14:00, or alternatively, during an evening class, from 18:00 to 21:30, taking up very little of your time, but enabling you to master essential basic baking theory and practical skills, more than sufficient to get you started with confidence.

The basics you need to understand include the science of understanding what happens in the oven during the baking process (a basic scientific process) and acquiring a knowledge of baking ingredients and how they combine and work together to produce the desired results. You’ll also be taught how to decorate the results of the cakes you’ve produced. During your first basic baking course, our lecturer will demonstrate a variety of techniques for producing four delectable treats, which you’ll prepare, applying what you’ve learned and observed:

  • Strawberries and cream scones – an enduring teatime treat.
  • Victoria sponge cake with butter cream frosting – light, fluffy-textured, and decadently delicious.
  • Genoise sponge chocolate Swiss roll – no basic course could possibly be complete without something containing everyone’s favourite: Chocolate.
  • Carrot and olive oil cupcakes with cream cheese frosting – loved by persons of all ages.

You’ll be astounded by how easily you’ll accomplish your baking during your 1-day basic baking course, while you’ll have to agree that your newly acquired baking “repertoire” is rather amazing, after only one session.

Basics and Onward

Who knows where this may lead? Once you have the basics in place, you may well decide to proceed with Prue Leith’s more advanced courses, surprising yourself with how little effort it requires to produce your own baked masterpieces, much to the delight of everyone who’s privileged and pleased to partake of your sweet and savoury treats.

At Prue Leith’s, our basic baking and all other short, part-, and full-time courses are presented by highly experienced, qualified, and professional lecturers and chefs in fully equipped kitchens, so you’ll learn the best (course programmes), from the best (Prue Leith Chefs Academy).
